Don’t know what to buy? (GPS or CB Radio)?

Hey everyone,

I have a Truck, and was thinking of either buying a CB Radio (for offroading and talking with friends, I don’t like spending my very little prepaid cellphone minutes) OR buying a handheld GPS for hiking and geocaching. What do you think?

Either:

CB radio. Good for communicating with friends and using for if I get stuck while offroading. Saves on the Cellphone bill. Plus if my cellphone reception dies, I have it as a backup.

Handheld GPS. Good for Geocaching and Hiking, I’ll never get lost. Plus it’s extremely helpful for other things.

So Yahoo…. what do you think?
I see myself Offroading a LOT more than Hiking and Geocaching… however I could also use the GPS for Offroading… it sure beats a map! ;)

    Road Tested….Highway Approved

depends on which you do more often

THEN i would say GPS mainly because it has more uses and alot more practical then the CB radio

i would definitely say CB, but if you do go CB di it right the first time… otherwise your just going to be disappointed and need to fix it up/upgrade…

they are great for off roading, a lot of guys have them, but they are also useful when driving around at night, i prefer to stay off channel 19 in the middle of the day, b ut late night trips its great. beats a radar detector.
If you want to use it to talk a little further than your standard 4 miles, try to get one with SSB only problem is only those with SSB can recieve it as well.

CB has a lot more uses than just off roading, while it does come in handy there, its also fun and comes in handy other places as well.

G’day mate, you gave me pause to have a stop and think with your question, but in the long run you are talking about two different priorities between fun/relaxation and survival. Please excuse me if I am taking “offroading” out of context, but in Australia we get folks going 4 wheel driving and their under estimation of our environment makes for a lethal mistake.
I won’t go getting graphic, but if you are seriously off road and broken down,do you want to where you are or ask for help?A map won’t fix the truck!OK,geocaching is enjoyable like hiking and other out door activities, but pertaining to these is if you hit unknown trouble is the ability to be able to call for assistance.
There is your main concern, with that in mind I agree with The TeZ,make sure you have the right radio (not UHF) 27megs and water, food and first aid kit to have a contingency plan in place for X factor.
I hope I haven’t sounded too much like an alarmist but to be for-warned is to be for-warned,we “lose” people every year due to this type of error,so I would rather give you good advice (if too serious?) than send you on an unplanned trip.
Strewth I can waffle hey?” but Cheers to you and your friends and enjoy your driving safely.
    Good luck! Lachie.
