Hey everyone,

I have a Truck, and was thinking of either buying a CB Radio (for offroading and talking with friends, I don’t like spending my very little prepaid cellphone minutes) OR buying a handheld GPS for hiking and geocaching. What do you think?

Either:

CB radio. Good for communicating with friends and using for if I get stuck while offroading. Saves on the Cellphone bill. Plus if my cellphone reception dies, I have it as a backup.

Handheld GPS. Good for Geocaching and Hiking, I’ll never get lost. Plus it’s extremely helpful for other things.

So Yahoo…. what do you think?
I see myself Offroading a LOT more than Hiking and Geocaching… however I could also use the GPS for Offroading… it sure beats a map! ;)

Almost every new suction-cup-to-the-windshield GPS Navigation system I’ve played with only lets you specify a destination by City/State/Zip/Address, not by latitude/longitude, and doesn’t show current latitude/longitude coordinates.

What brands/models actually use and show coordinates in addition to a visual representation of the road you’re on? Almost all handheld GPS receivers do this, but none meant for automotive installations, and I consider this an important feature for some of the work I do.

I want to buy a handheld GPS thingy (never having used one before) but my mind is boggling looking through all the different ones available.

I’d use it for hiking in mountainous areas and probably geocaching, which sounds fun.

The Magellan Triton 400 looks quite good, as does the Garmin Vista HCx but the latter might be a bit too much feature-wise for my first…?

Can you recommend one? Not necessarily one of the two I mentioned, any suitable one!

Thanks :)

Oh, also, I’m in England so one that uses EGNOS would be nice. And can they give OS map references or only lat. and long.?
Joseph that wouldn’t be your website by any chance would it? They/you don’t even ship outside of the US. Your spam is not appreciated.

DD, thanks anyway but that’s not the kind of device I mean, I don’t need it for the car. Most of those issues won’t apply. :)

I am looking for a handheld GPS that I can throw anywhere in my car (even the trunk). I’ve heard of products that go under the car (not interested). I know from experience several years ago that you need a clear (or almost clear) field of view. Now I hear of devices that contridict this theory. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Using a unit such as a garmin handheld.
For example if I hike over hills I travel a vertical and a horizontal distance. This combined would be greater than the distance I would travel if the ground was flat. Is this extra distance also calculated, or is it just the simple point to point displacement?

I’m looking for a fairly cheap handheld GPSr mostly for geocaching in my area. I want something cheap but something that will work. I’ve been reading some reviews and a lot of them are very mixed for the lower end products. Two specific one’s I’ve seen are the “Lowrance iFINDER GO2 Handheld GPS Receiver” for about $80 and the “Garmin Etrex H Handheld Monochrome GPS” for about $90. If anyone has used these or knows of possible better ones please let me know what you think. Or if you know something about handheld GPSs that you think I should know, don’t be afraid to speak up. Thanks a lot everybody, all help is appreciated.

First, I don’t understand what “Mobile Web” is exactly. How do I find out if my fav sites have “mobile web”, and how much will this limit my browsing?

I’m looking for a handheld with some gps capability, office-to-go, and at least 2 gigs to store my stuff. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your helpful tips and advice!

If you know lots about ‘em let me know what one would best fit my needs. If you don’t know too much maybe you know where I can research them.
I am looking for a handheld recreational GPS device with a color screen, geo cache capabilities, topographical maps and some sort of ‘trace where you have been’ feature. Less expensive is better, but price is not a big determining factor!

I’v been Geocaching [www.geocaching.com] for a while now, and i know your supposed to have a handheld GPS, but iv been using a car one!

Im looking for a very cheap, possibly second hand if its going to be reliable, GPS, preferably Garmin, also i would like it to be able to run the WhereIGo applications that are growing on the web now.

If anyone could suggest a good and cheap model, or can tell me a good place to look – street stores or online(prefered); i’d love you very much indeed!
